Licorice is a sweetening substance obtained from the root of the licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra). The licorice roots have a delicate scent and a very sweet taste. The roots contain glycerine (23%), flavonoides, essential oils and ascorbic acid. It is mainly used for making candies and light ale. Licorice can also be found in pharmacies due to its alleviating effect of cough, cold, bronchitis and throat ache.
