Kadriorg – the Baroque Pearl of Tallinn. The only real baroque palace of Estonia, Kadriorg Palace and Park, was built in the first half of the 18th century by the Russian Tsar Peter I, who asked architect Niccoló Michetti to come from Italy for that special reason. The Kadriorg Palace and Park ensemble, called Catherinenthal according to the era, was named after the Russian empress Catherine I. This imperial summer residence has been visited by most of the Russian rulers later on. In 1930’s the residence of the Elder of the State of Estonia and later on the residence of the President was located in the palace. During 1946–1991 the palace was the main building of the Art Museum of Estonia. Presently the branch of the Art Museum of Estonia with the collection of European and Russian art of the 12–20th century is situated in the renovated Kadriorg Palace.
